LEICESTER, Mass. — A suspicious blaze in a vacant house at 6 Cemetery Road was extinguished by Leicester firefighters Tuesday evening.
The call came in at 10:05 p.m. from a neighbor leaving for work, according to Fire Chief Bob Wilson, who said firefighters arrived at the scene to discover heavy fire in the front room of the house.
The small, single-story ranch home is surrounded by overgrowth and has not been occupied for several years, Wilson said. He added there was no utility service to the building.
"It only took firefighters around 10 minutes to extinguish the blaze, but they spent more than an hour at the scene looking for hot spots and checking for fire extension into the walls and ceiling," said the chief, who reported no injuries.
The chief said the fire was suspicious in nature, and the cause is under investigation by members of the Leicester Fire Department, Leicester Police Dept as well as State Police assigned to the State Fire Marshal's Office.
All three Leicester fire companies responded, and Spencer firefighters covered the station during the fire.
