LEICESTER, Mass. - Jean Tucker Emens died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012, surrounded by her family at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Laurel E. and Judge George F. Leary in Leicester. She died on her 90th birthday.
Her husband of 67 years, Donald R. Emens, died in 2010.
In addition to her daughter with whom she lived, Jean leaves two sons, Dane R. Emens and his wife Svetlana of Hamlin, N.Y., and Donald Scott Emens of Woodstock, Ga.; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Her brother Archibald Tucker died in 2009.
Jean was born in Rochester, N.Y., daughter of Archibald and Katharine (Sanford) Tucker. She lived in upstate New York until retiring to Palm Beach Shores in Fla. in 1978. She moved to Leicester in 2009.
Jean and her husband Don considered themselves blessed to have enjoyed 31 years of active retirement in Florida.
Jean graduated from John Marshall High School in Rochester and Alfred University in Alfred, N.Y., where she also earned a master's degree. Jean was a teacher of fine arts for many years at Portville Elementary School in Portville, N.Y. and Olean High School in Olean, N.Y. She was gratified that so many of her former students thanked her later in life for engaging them in art.
Beyond teaching, Jean was always deeply involved in her community. She was president of the Parent Teachers Association, and a Cub Scout leader. She was a talented artist in her own right and an avid gardener.
Jean will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her.
There will be a graveside service this fall at a time to be announced in Maple Grove Cemetery in Gainesville, N.Y.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the VNA Care Network Hospice, 120 Thomas St., Worcester 01608.
