SHREWSBURY, Mass. — There is the potential for some very severe weather late this afternoon and into tonight. The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center has the Central Massachusetts area with a 15 percent chance of large hail, a 45 percent chance of damaging winds and a 10 percent chance of a tornado, which is a very high percent for us.

See the NWS map here.

The NWS Taunton office also has included this risk in their morning forecast discussion

This is a particularly strong system with a history of damaging winds and at least 4 deaths. Keep up-to-date on later forecasts through National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Radio and other media, because changes may rapidly occur.

The coastal plain, Cape Cod and the islands may see less severe weather as this area may be protected somewhat by the marine influence on the atmosphere. This tends to reduce the severity of thunderstorms which may be the case late this afternoon and tonight, but these areas should remain vigilant as the severe weather could sweep all the way to the coast.

Updates will follow as needed.
