Gallery: Leicester Cub Scouts Race In Pinewood Derby

LEICESTER, Mass. — To the hoots and hollers of Leicester's Cub Scout racers, wood-carved speedsters careened down steep-sloped tracks Saturday at the annual Pinewood Derby.

Built for speed, the creatively-shaped derby cars were engineered by the young scouts to weigh under 5 ounces, and were cut to spec by adults in scout leader Dennis McGrail's wood shop in the weeks before the race.

From hot-rods to skateboards, scouts put their custom vehicles head-to-head down the track, which had an optical sensor at the finish line to help determine the winners in the neck-and-neck races.

Winners in the 2013 Pinewood Derby included:

Wolves:

  1. Jacob McGrail
  2. Jason Millgate
  3. Matt Broskey

Tigers:

  1. Noah Hallen
  2. Patrick Harrington
  3. Greg Pappas

Weebelos:

  1. Anthony Moreau
  2. Evan Bermudez
