LEICESTER, Mass. — Before the snow thaws and the baseball diamonds re-emerge, Leicester Little League will kick off fundraising for its spring season with its annual fishing derby on Sargent Pond on Feb. 9.
"This is our first fundraiser for 2013, and we hope to raise enough money to put toward the opening of our spring season, which is really only a few months away," said Sharon Giggey, the league's fundraising coordinator.
"We would love for the fisherman and families to get out for a fun day on the ice," she said. Even those who don't fish "can put their skates on and give it a whirl," she said.
Cash prizes will be awarded for the biggest bass, perch and pickerel, based on weight and length.
Registration is $20 for adults and free for children 12 and under. Fishing licenses are required.
The derby will run from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, on Sargent Pond behind the Castle Restaurant.
